Feb 22, 2010
Multi-D Jewel in 2011 will be in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on the east coast of the US, September 16-29. Class starts at 9am on the 16th and ends 5-5:30pm on the 29th.
Weather is warm in September. Often there are dolphins swimming in visible sight close to the beach.
Our Venue is the Surfside Oceanfront Inn & Suites. (Details are below.)
IMPORTANT: Virginia Beach is a very busy place year round. There are all kinds of conventions, festivals, reunions, etc. So, if you know you are coming to this class, book your hotel room now, so you don’t forget to book early. If you book late, you may have some difficulty finding a room within an easy walk of the venue.
REGISTRATION:
Yvonne
Andrus is the contact person for registration. Because of the expected size of
this class, the policy for this class will require that full payment be done
before the class. The cost of the class is $1390, dropping to $1290 with early
registration discounts. There is a $50 Discount if the deposit is received by a month before the start of class
(Aug 17, 2011) AND another $50
Discount if
the balance is also received by 2 weeks before start of class (unless other
arrangements have been agreed to beforehand). For balances not received by 3
days before class, there will be an added admin fee of $30. The credit card
form for these classes is on the last page of this file. All other aspects
of the Deposit/ Balance/ Refund Policy are the same as for other classes.
TRAVEL:
Airport: There is an airport about 20 miles and a 25-minute drive from the beachfront of Virginia Beach, where the class and your hotel will be: The Norfolk International Airport (abbreviation is ORF). Unless you are flying from the East Coast of the US, you will most likely need to make a connecting flight from a larger hub. For airport information, go to http://www.norfolkairport.com/ . Another option, if you want to have a car for your stay, is to fly direct into Washington DC, (Dulles International Airport), rent a car there, and then drive the rest of the way. That should save you some money on your flight, which will help pay for the car. The drive is about 210 miles and should take about 3 ½ hours, if there is mild traffic.
Getting to your hotel from Norfolk International Airport: The easiest thing is to take a taxi. There is a taxi stand at the airport, where cabs from different companies line up to take you to wherever you want to go. The cost should be about $35-$50. This is the rate for the cab (not including tip), not per person, as long as you are all going to the same hotel.
There is also:
Airport Express, a sedan service, which you would call in advance for reservations. Their number is (757) 857-3991. Cost is $35 for up to 3 people, $8 each additional person.
Carey VIP service: If you have a few people, you can save by using this service. There are no reservations taken. You go to Door 3 of the airport for pickup, usually with a maximum wait of 15 minutes. $33 plus $5 for each additional passenger for up to 3 additional passengers (ie, 3 passengers would cost $43; 4 would cost $48). 1-877-422-1105 or 1-757-321-1541 (at the airport). Website is: http://careyvip.net/careyvip/airportconnection/ or email sales@careyvip.net
Orange Peel Transportation: If you have a few people, you can save by using this service as well. Cost is $42 for 1 person, $44 for 2 people, $46 for 3 people and then $13 extra for each additional person. For this service, you need to make advance reservations. Call 1-757-463-7500. Or go to www.norfolkairportshuttle.com .
Train & Bus: There does not seem to be any bus or train possibilities from the airport.
Note that all the hotels below have free parking for their guests, and for their guests only. Our venue, though, may be able to accommodate parking for those needing to drive there. You’ll have to check when you come to class the first day.
OUR VENUE:
Surfside Oceanfront Inn & Suites, is our venue.
Location: 1211 Atlantic Avenue (at 12th St.), Virginia Beach, VA, 23451.
Phone: 1-757-428-1183 or 1-800-437-2497.
Fax: 1-757-428-2243
The best way to make a reservation is by sending an email to Jan or Tomoko at: sales@virginiabeachsurfside.com . Let her know what day you are arriving and leaving, what kind of room you want, and provide your credit card info—and as usual, for Internet security, write out each fourth number as a word, like this: 445six 233four ….. If you have a strong accent that would make it difficult for an English desk clerk to understand, this would probably be the best way to reserve. You can also call the hotel and ask to speak to her.
The rate for the VortexHealing group is just $79/day + taxes (an excellent rate for September), whether there is 1 or 2 people in the room. Let Jan know you are with the VortexHealing group. They have a few 2-room suites for $124 + tax/ night. These have a full-size frig. Note that kitchen utensils are not provided.
All the rooms have private balconies that face the sea. They all come with a small refrigerator and microwave, cable TV & DVD player, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, and a private safe in the room. There is free wireless in the lobby, and free hi-speed Internet access in the rooms, but an Ethernet cable is required in the rooms. They will sell you one at the front desk for $10, but you can pick one up for less. Rooms come with free Continental breakfast. They also have nine 2-room suites, which come with different bed configurations, all of which have queen-sized pullout sofa-beds in the living room. These, of course, are more expensive than the regular rooms—prices for both are below. If you want a suite on site, you should reserve it immediately.
If we run out of rooms here, a few buildings up the street is their ‘sister’ hotel, owned by the same owners, called the Sandcastle. The rooms in each hotel are quite similar. Both hotels have recently refurbished their bathrooms and the rooms are in good condition. They are older buildings, and it shows a bit in the hallways, but the rooms are very nice and the front of the lobby of our venue has a fountain with a nice a waterfall. For students sharing a room, it may be convenient that the sink is not directly in the bathroom, enabling an easier time-share in the morning.
Our meeting
room is on the 4th floor.
The Sandcastle (1307 Atlantic Ave // 1-757-428-2828). This is the sister hotel, next door. It has similar, almost identical rooms, but not all of them are ocean-side. Some are on the side of the building, from where you can see the ocean but you are not facing it, and some are poolside. In addition, they only have one 2-room suite (that has a King bed and pull out queen-sofa, facing the sea). They do have 6 kitchenettes, which are bigger than regular rooms but smaller than the 2-BR suite, as there is only one room, but the room is big enough to have 2 queen beds and a queen-sized pullout sofa bed, larger bathroom with double-sink. Note that kitchen utensils are not provided. These suites are $125 + tax/night. But to get our group rates, you need to go through Jan or Tomoko at the Surfside Oceanfront—see the contact info above.
Ocean Suites, at 2315 Atlantic Ave (at 23rd St).
1-757-428-1111 or 1-800-554-5560. www.oceansuitesvb.com . It is .7 miles (~.44 km)
from our venue, up Atlantic Ave.
Ocean Suites is all suites (no regular rooms) and will work
very well for those who want to cook their own dinners. It is also an easier
walk to the health food store, which is at 31st St. and Pacific Ave.
(Pacific is 1 block inland from Atlantic Ave.) But it is .7 of a mile from our
venue. If you don’t mind walking though, you can walk from one to the other on
the concrete boardwalk, or come by bicycle.
Ocean Suites was recently torn apart by its new owners and
completely redone. Everything is very new. All suites have a private balcony
overlooking the sea. The suites have small rooms, but each suite comes with a
bedroom and a living room that has a pullout sofa and a fully equipped
kitchenette—with refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and electric
stove (no oven), and furnished with plates, utensils and pots & pans. Each
suite also has a 37-inch LCD TV with DVD player, free hi-speed wireless
Internet, hair dryer, iron & ironing board and in-room safe. And the place
is made of concrete, so the rooms will have good sound insulation from other
suites.
The suites come in different configurations, some with 1
queen bed, some with 2 doubles and some with 1 double and 1 bunk bed (along
with the pullout sofa in the living room).
We have a contracted rate for these classes of just $79
+ tax/night.
OTHER HOTELS:
Some students prefer to look for their own perfect dream hotel, and there are many of them in Virginia Beach. But I haven’t made a list of these because I would rather encourage students to stay at the venue. The rate is low, the rooms are nice and the more students stay on site the more it starts to feel like a residential class. In addition, the hotel has been good to us, and since it is our venue, I would rather support them than other hotels that we have no relationship with.
I do want to encourage you to stay at our venue, though. It’s nice to be on site with the rest of the group. Of course, if you need a suite and they have run out, or if you intend on cooking, do go to the other places listed. But for regular rooms, if there is still space, I would encourage you to stay on-site. In addition, the more of us that are in the hotel, the quieter the hotel will be. There are all kinds of teenage groups that come through Virginia Beach: bands, cheerleader groups, etc. And they are not the quietest folk. So, the more of us that are at the hotel, the less of ‘them’ will be there. Conversely, if you stay at our hotel, you have a better chance of being in a quiet environment in the evening, when you want to sleep.

Note from Ric: I always tune into a restaurant before going in, asking Merlin to rate it on a 0-10 scale. I wouldn’t eat in anything below a 7. Also, I usually now give it 2 ratings: one for the energy level of the food and one for the quality of the food. Without the 2 ratings, you could have a very spiritual cook giving the food nice energy but using low quality oils and still get a decent overall rating. At least you can bring up the energy of the food; you can’t change the oils.
